Cidade Velha

Cidade Velha, once Ribeira Grande is a city 15 km east of the capital Praia and is famous for being the first place in the Archipelago declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. Cidade Velha was a very important hub for trade with the Americas between 1500 and 1700. For this reason in the city it is possible to visit the oldest colonial church in the world (built in 1495) and Forte Real de Sao Filipe, a massive fortress built in 1590 after the repeated attacks of the English corsair Francis Drake

The Portuguese Fort

This fortress was built in 1590 after repeated attacks of the English pirate Francis Drake. It is part of the Cidade Velha UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was renovated in 2000 nd it’s open to the public.

the Plateau

The Plateau is a plateau on which the historic center of the capital Praia is located. It is a raised area compared to the rest of the city and for this reason you can enjoy a beautiful view of the gulf.
Plateau is characterized by beautiful and colorful historic buildings of Portuguese architecture. At the Plateau it is possible to visit the central market and stroll among typical shops and public gardens.
